Netherlands Film Festival High pressure cooker for talent development

‘The NFF Talent Day is a sort of pressure cooker. The idea behind it is that, by the time the talents have left the room that evening, they will know which funds to approach, how to continue working on their plan, with whom to work on it, and how to promote their film.’

Silvia van der Heiden, director NFF

The Nederlands Film Festival (NFF) is committed to providing constant training for professionals, both beginners and experienced, to ensure that Dutch film can compete with high quality international productions. The NFF encourages talent to further their development and unites emerging and established filmmakers from the Netherlands and abroad. ‘We focus on a broad range of talent: from recent graduates to mid-career, and from secondary education to university level,’ says director Silvia van der Heiden. ‘We welcome new talent to get inspired, to grow, to be challenged and to expand their networks.’ All year round, the NFF provides support to filmmakers through its development programmes, such as BoostNL. This enables a new generation of filmmakers to evolve and gain professional experience, which also includes an understanding of commercial interests. This results in the realisation of four films and a documentary series every year.

Valhalla

The true ‘Valhalla’ of talent development however, is the NFF Talent Day. During so-called Talent Speed Dates, talented filmmakers are given the opportunity to expand their networks. In these short one-on-one meetings, they will be able to talk with producers as well as representives of fund and broadcast organisations. Moreover, for their Talent Feedback Sessions, the NFF will select screenwriters, directors and (junior) producers who are currently developing a (web)series or film plan, in order for them to give and receive feedback from established film professionals. In the closed session programme Script & Score, composers and filmmakers are introduced to one another’s work. These composers create music demos based on a number of selected film projects in development. The exciting finale of the NFF Talent Day is the NFF Talent Award Ceremony, which will spotlight the filmmakers of tomorrow. Van der Heiden: ‘The NFF Talent Day is a sort of pressure cooker. The idea behind it is that, by the time the talents have left the room that evening, they will know which funds to approach, how to continue working on their plan, with whom to work on it, and how to promote their film.’
